What is the "Extinct Media Museum"?

The Extinct Media Museum is a private museum that collects and exhibits media devices that have died out or are dying out in the process of evolution based on the idea that all media other than paper and stone will become extinct.

It is located in Otemachi and Koenji.

The Otemachi museum houses and exhibits video cameras, photo cameras, typewriters, personal computers, and recording media, while the Koenji museum houses and exhibits music players, cell phones, PDAs, and cassette tapes.

Visitors can take still and moving images, as well as get hands-on with the collection. The ultimate goal is to have visitors record the collection on their own media, which will then be distributed and stored on the network.

How is the collection of the Extinct Media Museum collected?

Eighty percent of the exhibits in the "Extinct Media Museum" collection are donated, and 20% are purchased through excavations.

Kawai, the director of Himanainu Studio, uploaded his personal collection on SNS and started calling for donations around 2019, "If you are thinking of throwing away old and unusable equipment like this, please donate it to us! and started calling for donations around 2019. Then, people who have been spending more time at home due to the Corona disaster began to discard their old equipment, and one after another, media equipment was donated from all over the country.

Whenever we have time, we also go to recycle stores and other places to protect equipment that we feel can still be put in the spotlight depending on how it is displayed in the junk bins.

Although the equipment is usually displayed statically, some of it still works. In particular, many of the double 8 cameras (a format that was active from the 1930s to the mid-1960s) are spring-loaded and still work well.

History of the Museum

January 2020
Display of old computers and other items in the waiting room of Himanainu Studio Otemachi
Display of old video cameras and other items used by the director
Donation of old cameras by studio users will begin spontaneously.
The collection begins under the name "Gadget Museum".

July 2022
The director, worried about the geekiness and lack of scope of the name "Gadget Museum," decides to collect old recording media such as floppy disks and smart media in addition to hardware, and changes the name to "Extinct Media Museum.

August - October 2022
The name "Extinct Media Museum" gradually becomes a hot topic on SNS, and donations begin to arrive from all over Japan. Preparations begin to make the waiting room of Himanainu Studio Otemachi into a museum. In October, a research preview of the "Otemachi Museum of Extinction Media" was held. The museum receives a visit from a leading media researcher, and the response is positive.

November 2022
The "Extinct Media Museum in Koenji" opens. The company posts 1,000 pocket tissues in the neighborhood to announce the opening, and conducts nightly test runs for a month, but the business is in the red. However, during this period, he meets some key people with whom he will have strong connections later, including a group that preserves the still video camera "Mavica" and Mero Yamashita, a proponent of "Heisei Retro," who comes to the store. Barbara Aska, a part-time bartender at the time, expressed an interest in becoming more actively involved in the museum and was appointed deputy director, in charge of managing the official Twitter account and developing museum merchandise.

December 2022
The museum repeatedly announces on Twitter that it will be accepting donations of old cameras and media that are discarded as part of the New Year's holiday cleanup, and many donated items are received from all over Japan. The director, who does not have a driver's license, actively visited HARD OFF stores scattered along Route 16 with the help of acquaintances who own cars to strengthen the excavation process of the collection. Kaedeya, the landlord of the Otemachi Museum of Extinction Media, will be asked to acquire an antique dealer license so that he can sell the antique cameras and other items acquired through this excavation work as souvenirs.

January 2023
The museum will be open from 11:00 to 19:00 on weekdays after its official opening on January 13, and the director and deputy director of the museum will hold night museums on occasional days. In addition, the museum's director and deputy director will hold night museums on an irregular basis. The museum has also established a system to accommodate visitors while working on the museum's collection list, framing, and other tasks. (continued)
