戦後の日本で標準的に使われた4号自動式卓上電話機。4号電話機は1950年に登場し、電電公社時代を代表する黒電話となった。本機は大興電機製作所（Taiko）製。ダイヤル中央には「受話器を耳にあてて、“ツー”という音（発信音）を確かめてからダイヤルをまわしてください」と記されている。この表示は初期の4号電話機には見られず、自動交換方式の利用方法を案内するため中期以降に付けられたもの。後の600形電話機へつながる、日本の電話機史を代表する一台。
Late 1950s/Taiko/Model 4A Telephone/Rotary Dial/Black
The Model 4A was one of Japan’s standard postwar automatic desk telephones. Introduced as part of the Model 4 series in 1950, it became a familiar telephone during the era of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. This example was manufactured by Taiko Electric Works. The label in the center of the dial instructs users to listen for the dial tone before dialing—a feature not found on the earliest Model 4 telephones and added to later examples as automatic telephone exchanges became more widespread. The Model 4 series was an important predecessor of the later Model 600 telephone.
