【Explanation】
Estimated 1950/Showa 25/Ikko Sha/START 35 II/Bolta Film/Miniature Camera/Bakelite/Black
A compact camera from the START 35 series produced by Ikko Sha in postwar Japan. It uses paper-backed 35mm-wide Bolta film to produce square 24×24mm photographs. The START 35 series appeared around 1948, while this three-aperture version with F8, F11 and F16 settings belongs to the START 35 II generation introduced around 1950. Its photographic controls are extremely simple, with an instantaneous shutter plus Bulb and no focusing or exposure meter. Film is loaded by removing the upper section of the camera rather than opening a conventional back, a characteristic of the earlier START models. With its black Bakelite body, folding viewfinder and metal lens cap, the START 35 represents the inexpensive Japanese “miniature” cameras that made amateur photography more accessible during the early postwar period.
